First up on our Meet The Mother Maker series, we would like to introduce you to a mother we have admired for quite some time.  Evelina Westman, co-founder behind The Birth Poster and Schmeck Studios.

Evelina and her husband Gustav live in Stockholm with their little son Uno. Together they run their design studio  and a few poster businesses.  The most famous being The Birth Poster which you may or may not have seen pop up on your pinterest feeds. The Birth Poster is a series of unique and timeless illustrated birth posters at a scale of 1:1 to your baby actual length at birth. Evelina is the artist of the illustrations.

They also run a few smaller poster ventures: The Note Poster, a series of posters with the notes of childrens favourite lullaby songs. Grafiskt Personnummer, graphic posters with patterns generated from your identity number (social securitynumber). And finally a frame store, selling timeless frames online. You can shop her collections here.

How do you juggle Motherhood with running your own company?

“I have learnt after some time now that it’s impossible to do both at the same time, so I work in shifts. When Uno is taking a nap during the day or go to sleep at night I can work. And, since I’m running the business with my husband we can balance work and baby between each other as well. We have a very equal relationship and work as a really strong team.”

Whats your favourite bit about being a mother?

“All the love you get to give and receive every day! Becoming a mother for the first time, it is still quite overwhelming how powerful the love feels like. Fuels you up every day! I believe it creates a strength in me that makes me work even harder than before and with higher goals than ever.”

Whats been the most challenging part of being a mother?

“Uno is my first baby and I think everything, more or less, has been challenging with becoming a mother for the first time. Even the enormous love that comes along with it makes you aware of how fragile life is now.

At one point I had to go to a therapist for some sessions to sort out all the feelings and thoughts I had. Really helped. “

Head on over to The Birth Poster and customize your own poster using the time and date of your child’s birth including their weight, and length for a 1:1 scale illustration that would look great on the wall of your home.

What does the future hold for Schmeck Studios/Evelina Westman. Will we be seeing any future collaborations? Where would you like to see the company in 5-10 years?

“This year we’re focusing on international expansion. Hiring people and making changes so that our organisation can grow (so far it has only been me and Gustav). On the side of The Birth Poster we’re developing a clothing brand for kids. Will be released this year, very exciting stuff! In 5-10 years we run the leading brands within the baby business.”

How would you describe your style?

“If I were to describe my style, I would say Scandinavian minimalism. It’s a given since I’m from Stockholm and have been surrounded by that style whole of my life. “
