Meet The Mother Maker

  • Meet The Mother Maker // Donna Wilson

Next up on Meet The Mother Maker series we got to chat to world renowned designer Donna Wilson.

Donna  and her husband and two boys live in East London. Originally from Aberdeenshire, Donna is known for her vibrant and playful homewares and textile designs. Best known for her knitted creatures that light up any living space and instantly make you smile, she has developed a brand that is world renowned for its originality and use of colour, patterns and quirky illustrations. . We got to speak to her about what makes her tick, how she handles being a mum of two and running a successful business and where she draws her inspiration from.

I know you started out making knitted soft toy creatures when you began studying at the Royal College of Art. Do you still have your first knitted toy that you ever made?

“Yes I have a collection of the first ones up on my wall in the studio, it’s really funny to see how they have changed. They started off a lot weirder, then they got tamer and more animal-like and now I’m seeing a resurgence of the weirder ones again. I still can’t quite believe I have made a business making knitted creatures.”

Did you begin knitting by hand or did you use machines? Was this a new craft you had to learn?

“My grandma tried teaching me to hand knit but I’m too impatient and I wanted to see results more quickly. When I started art school  I was introduced to the knitting machine. I loved how fast it was to see results and that I could control the pattern, colour and  texture of what I was creating – so that was the beginning of the whole journey!”

At what point did you decide to take it a step further and begin developing clothing, homewares and accessories?

“I was always one for having my fingers in lots of pies, so at the RCA I collaborated with a Design Products student. We created an amazing floor covering made of 3,500 glove fingers, which introduced me to the world of furniture and interiors. I was also always looking to design other products that could sell in the same shops that the creatures sell in, so that side was always developing along side the creatures. I think the big break for the furniture was meeting SCP, a design shop in East London that also manufactures their own furniture. I collaborated with them in 2009 to design a sofa, arm chairs and collections of knitted ottomans.”

What has been your favourite product to design to date?

“There have been so many! One favourite was the puppet show for the Ljubljana children’s theatre, where we knitted the set and puppets for a fantastic touring show called Goose the Bear.”

Has having kids changed the way that you run your business? or the decisions that you make for the business?

” Yes, definitely. The first few years of having my kids, my business suffered a bit. I was in shock with how mentally demanding having children is! I had to learn to delegate a lot which was a good thing, but I kept working for my sanity, because I felt like my work was one of the things that made me feel like me! But now my kids are 3 and 5 and I have renewed my energy again, I think having kids has made me more ambitious in a way. Now I’m doing this for them as well as just me so that drives me a bit more. “

Last year, the Donna Wilson team collaborated with  Ljubljana Puppet Theatre to make all the wool characters and scenery for this classic German children’s story Goose The Bear.

” But now my kids are 3 and 5 and I have renewed my energy again, I think having kids has made me more ambitious in a way. Now I’m doing this for them as well as just me so that drives me a bit more. “

Are you a work on the weekend kind of mum? How would you describe a normal working week? are you guilty of working in the evenings? some of us have different times where we like to be creative and other times for being productive

“I never work on the weekend ( If I can help it).  It’s a really precious time for me because I don’t see the kids through the week until the evening. I try not to be on my phone too much when I’m with them, as I don’t want them to think of me as a mum that doesn’t stop working. I want them to have my attention. So quite often when they go to bed, I will try to catch up a bit in the evening – but I am really lucky to have a great team that support me too!”

Whats been your biggest influence/inspiration? Or where do you go/what do you do when you are having a creative block?

I do occasionally get a block. I find the best way to get inspiration is go to a car boot sale or a  library – and to try not to look at Instagram too much as it’s so distracting. I think getting inspiration  from a real object helps to keep things more original.

I know your husband is also a creative and designs furniture. How important is his role in the Donna Wilson brand? or do you keep your careers separate?

We do keep our businesses quite separate, and I guess our house is where we collaborate. Jon makes lots of our furniture and we both have input into what we do with the house. Luckily we have similar taste. He recently made some beautiful plywood  bunk beds that can be adjusted as the kids grow.

I know you have always supported the UK textiles industry and where possible had your products made here. For small businesses, making a margin on products for wholesale can be quite challenging especially when UK manufacturing costs are so much higher than other countries. Do you have any advice for brands on how to maintain relationships with UK manufacturers and keep costs down?

“Yes I have always felt so strongly about doing our own bit to help our economy, but I am finding it harder and harder with the wholesale margin too.  It’s really tricky but it’s about trying to be clever with design –  making sure products are made in the most economical way, for example by cutting down on colours, and also speaking to the manufacturers to hear their opinions too.And it’s definitely best to meet with them face to face. We work so much on email, but it’s so much better to see who you’re working with as the relationship will be stronger.”

You have done a lot of collaborations.. I know its hard to say but do you have a favourite project that you have worked on? any advice for brands looking to collaborate with larger brands? Did they come to you or did you approach them?

Most people have approached us, except for the collaboration with Japanese ceramicist Makoto Kagoshima, who I approached as I loved his work. He came to the studio a couple of times and we created a collection of knitted creatures together. I loved his way of looking at things. I feel you learn so much from any collaboration, it’s such a rich process as everyone works differently.

Where are you both from? Describe us your childhood, and how its impacted you both as mothers and women in business today.

“We were both born in Guimaraes, Portugal. We had a simple and easy going childhood, close to our cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents. We believe this has developed in us a deep sense of our roots and a sense of family and belonging. It is almost as if we are a part of a “tribe”. As mothers we are the same, we help and are helped by close members of the family, and this greatly helps our business.

It seems like you all have such a strong family relationship, having worked in your fathers business for all those years. Whats it like working with your sister now? How do you split the work??

“Claudia is the designer and she is in charge of the creative department. I take care of sales and accounts. We do quite different parts of the work but they are complementary. We get along well and help each other whenever necessary.”

“It is almost as if we are a part of a “tribe”. As mothers we are the same, we help and are helped by close members of the family, and this greatly helps our business.”

We know that the years of experience gained making shirts in your fathers company enabled you both with the tools and ideas to create something of your own but what inspired you to go into children’s designer wear??

We thought it would be more interesting to experiment and create in the childrens wear world because we felt that this would allow us to be more free and creative, since we believe childrens wear is still a growing market and it is still possible to have a positive impact on this area.

” ..childrenswear is still a growing market and it is still possible to have a positive impact on this area..”

We see you also provide a small selected capsule range of clothing for adults. Is this something you do for every collection?

“We have tried this due to the positive feedback towards our patterns and styles so we had quite a high amount of requests from our customers to develop an adult line. Our SS17 collection was the first we are doing adult pieces but we sold out of  most of the adult pieces, so the expectations are good to continue doing these.”

Your children appear in your look books and campaign images? Whats it like working with your children too? How old are they?
“I (Sonia) have 2 kids, Afonso who is 7 and Rita who is 5. Claudia’s daughter Irene is only 2 years . They are part of Wolf&Rita history and it is great to feature them in our lookbooks, which in a way seem like a family album. We are already dreading the moment they will become too grown up and we will need to find new models..”
You have recently attended quite a few trade shows? Which are your favourites?
Yes, we recently attended Pitti Bimbo, Playtime Paris, Playtime NY and Loop Tokyo. Each of the shows has its unique atmosphere so they are all worth going to.
Are there any exciting collaborations on the horizon?
Yes. It is still in a very early phase so unfortunately it will have to remain secret for now..
Whats the best bit of advice you could give any other mothers looking to go into a creative business on their own?
Have faith in your talent but also work hard to make it become a reality. Luck is simply not enough.
What is your idea of the perfect Mother’s Day? How do you celebrate it?
We usually have lunch with our own Mother and spend the day with the kids. It seems perfect to us.
and I guess we all love a Mother’s Day Breakfast in bed. How do you like your eggs?
    Sonia: Boiled
    Claudia: Boiled too.

We would love some recommendations for families travelling to Portugual. These can be cool restaurants, family friendly places, can be in your hometown or Lisbon.
For food, Portugal is really an amazing place to eat, so there are many great places to go… Miss Opo in Porto. Regarding places, Lisbon and Porto are the main cities to visit, but there is also Évora, Coimbra, Sintra and our hometown Guimarães which we strongly recommend. • Meet The Mother Maker // Alex from ByAlex Playmats

Like many of our ‘mother makers’, Alex runs a successful interior furnishings and accessories brand from home, producing cushions and playmats in an array of colours and fabrics. Last week we were lucky enough to catch up with Alexandra Noorman who lives in Rotterdam with her husband Pieter and 3 children, Faas 6, Simon 3 and Hella 1.

It was when Alex was faced with the decision of going back to work, that she felt she needed to be at home with her children, yet craved a project of her own. After spending time with her children at home, she soon became restless and the idea of sewing playmats was born.

With a fun selection of fabrics, impeccable colour combinations, these playmats have become an online sensation, and we expect to see these on many more children’s interior blogs, pinned all over pinterest and posted regularly on your instagram feed. They are perfect for creating that perfect little reading nook or play area in the corner of your living room.

We are offering 15% off on her store by using code TMM2017. Head on over to check out her awesome collection of playmats, cushions and sweet interior accessories. www.byalex.shop

We speak to her about superhero powers, running a business from home and her top tips for families travelling to Rotterdam.  Read more below…

How do you balance your role as a mother and your role as an entrepreneur?

“When I had my full time job, I wanted to be home with the kids. When I quit my job as a policy advisor at the government, I soon got restless and wanted to work again. For me there is no perfect balance, because I always felt one part of me was lacking. What I do is try to‘focus’ on whatever I am doing at that moment whether I am with the kids,or working on By Alex Playmats. I think keeping a clear division between the two is important, and separating your time. I know, this sounds quite organised and well-balanced. Most days I stick to it and it works… but there are those days when we mess it all up.”

Many mothers struggle with that next step in their career when they decide to have a child. Was sewing and creating always something that you wanted to do ?
“Ever since I was a child I loved to create with fabrics. My mom used to sew at our kitchen table and I loved hand sewing and cutting the fabric. As a teenager I started to sew my own clothes. Somewhere along the line I followed another dream and went to university and got a job at the ministry of Culture. With our third baby coming up I decided I no longer wanted to work away from home. We all needed a more peaceful life. I quit my job to stay at home with the kids. But I soon got restless and wanted to work again. That’s when the whole play mat adventure started. I’m positive I’ve made a good choice in order to balance my life and spend more time with my kids, my husband and close friends.”

“I think keeping a clear division between the two is important, and separating your time. I know, this sounds quite organised and well-balanced. Most days I stick to it and it works… but there are those days when we mess it all up.”

Head on over to www.byalex.shop and browse their amazing range of cushions and playmats to make the perfect reading nook for your kids.

What has been your favourite part of being a mother?  “My favourite part of being a mother is to teach my kids to explore their own character, to love who they are and to not change it for their environment. Every person has his or her shortcomings, but when you focus on your best characteristics you’re always going to be a happier person for yourself and the people around you. Furthermore, I hope my kids will follow their dreams and use their skills. It took way too long for me to use mine as a profession. I only quit my job last year to do what I love best, which is creating things with fabrics. My kids see my love and devotion in creating the most beautiful play mats. Although, I’m quit busy with building a brand and improving my play mats, I hope they see I am enjoying every minute of what I do”

” I hope they see I am enjoying every minute of what I do..”

Any advice for any other mothers looking to go into business on their own? “Just follow your own feeling and guts… Of course its important to listen to advice, but make your own choices.”

What can we expect to see from ByAlex Playmats in the future? Any collaborations on the horizon? “Yep, there is a really nice collaboration going on with an illustrator. I’m so happy about how this works and you will see the result soon. Right now I’m also choosing new fabrics for the new collection of play mats. These will be launched in August.”

    A Perfect Workspace.

    Cats, Beach and Green.

If you were a new colour in a crayon box, what colour would you be and why? “Green. I love our garden in spring when it turns slowly from fresh bright green in April to deep dark green in June. For me ‘green’ is the colour of steady growth.”

Working mums are known for their supermum abilities to multitask. What’s your magic mother superpower?Being a cook with nothing in the fridge. I even surprise myself by making a proper dinner with the previous nights veggies from the fridge and some stuff from the cupboard.”

Name 3 interesting facts about yourself.
    1. I used to dream of becoming a ballerina and I still love to dance.
    2. I am grumpy all day without a cup of tea in the morning.
    3. I have a crush for vintage dresses.

  • Meet The Mother Maker // Evelina from The Birth Poster

First up on our Meet The Mother Maker series, we would like to introduce you to a mother we have admired for quite some time.  Evelina Westman, co-founder behind The Birth Poster and Schmeck Studios.

Evelina and her husband Gustav live in Stockholm with their little son Uno. Together they run their design studio  and a few poster businesses.  The most famous being The Birth Poster which you may or may not have seen pop up on your pinterest feeds. The Birth Poster is a series of unique and timeless illustrated birth posters at a scale of 1:1 to your baby actual length at birth. Evelina is the artist of the illustrations.

They also run a few smaller poster ventures: The Note Poster, a series of posters with the notes of childrens favourite lullaby songs. Grafiskt Personnummer, graphic posters with patterns generated from your identity number (social securitynumber). And finally a frame store, selling timeless frames online. You can shop her collections here.

How do you juggle Motherhood with running your own company?

“I have learnt after some time now that it’s impossible to do both at the same time, so I work in shifts. When Uno is taking a nap during the day or go to sleep at night I can work. And, since I’m running the business with my husband we can balance work and baby between each other as well. We have a very equal relationship and work as a really strong team.”

Whats your favourite bit about being a mother?

“All the love you get to give and receive every day! Becoming a mother for the first time, it is still quite overwhelming how powerful the love feels like. Fuels you up every day! I believe it creates a strength in me that makes me work even harder than before and with higher goals than ever.”

Whats been the most challenging part of being a mother?

“Uno is my first baby and I think everything, more or less, has been challenging with becoming a mother for the first time. Even the enormous love that comes along with it makes you aware of how fragile life is now.

At one point I had to go to a therapist for some sessions to sort out all the feelings and thoughts I had. Really helped. “

Head on over to The Birth Poster and customize your own poster using the time and date of your child’s birth including their weight, and length for a 1:1 scale illustration that would look great on the wall of your home.

What does the future hold for Schmeck Studios/Evelina Westman. Will we be seeing any future collaborations? Where would you like to see the company in 5-10 years?

“This year we’re focusing on international expansion. Hiring people and making changes so that our organisation can grow (so far it has only been me and Gustav). On the side of The Birth Poster we’re developing a clothing brand for kids. Will be released this year, very exciting stuff! In 5-10 years we run the leading brands within the baby business.”

How would you describe your style?

“If I were to describe my style, I would say Scandinavian minimalism. It’s a given since I’m from Stockholm and have been surrounded by that style whole of my life. “
